How to Do Crunches Safely and Other Exercise Options for Toned Abs 

If you want to tone your abs without doing crunches, here are some other exercises that can work your core just as well:  

Staying in a plank position works your abs, obliques, and lower back, among other core muscles. 


Place your hands behind your head and lift your legs straight up toward the sky. To work your lower abs, bring them back down without letting them touch the floor.  

Leg Raises

To do a Russian twist, sit on the floor with your feet off the ground and your knees bent. Hold a medicine ball or weight and move your body from side to side to work your obliques.  

Russian Twists

For bicycle crunches, lie on your back with your legs raised and your hands behind your head. As you turn your torso, bring one knee to your chest and touch the other arm to the knee. Switch sides like you're riding.

Start in a plank pose and bring one knee to your chest. Quickly switch legs while running while keeping your back straight.
